Logistical issues on our first day on Fraser Island meant we hadn't arrived in time to walk from Happy Valley to our camp site at Lake Garawongera as planned. (We 'd hitched a ride straight there instead). But since we hit the sleeping bags at 7p.m. that night we were up early enough for a little detour to see what we missed.
We planned to walk 'Just far enough to see the ocean' but we were making good time so we kept going. Although Parks estimated the 7km walk from the Lake to Happy Valley would take 2.5 to 3.5 hours, it actually took an hour and a half.
The beach doubles as a super highway!
We splashed around in the water and stopped at the Fraser Island
Retreat for....burgers, chips and lattes!!! No documentary evidence of
that! As we exited the trail into the village we noticed this sign:
The two rangers we spoke to at length about 50 metres from there did not even mention it, nor did the Parks Department when we'd called to organise camping permits a day earlier. The rangers suggested some must-see "sand blows" and a shortcut back to the barge, just in case we wanted to avoid the Taxi....
