When I'm travelling, I get so caught up in the moment, observing and engaging with people that I just have to document it. I don’t tend to snap and leave. I usually spend a while interacting with people so they’re comfortable. Over the years, I have taken thousands of portraits….I have outlined stories, scribbled down names and addresses and key words, promised to keep in touch, planned to write the most amazing stories…
Sometimes I’ve followed through. More times, I haven’t.
I’ve neither collated nor captioned these photos. The notes I scrawled down have become separated from the images... The emails I wrote that I thought would be a permanent record of my notes…they often included just a fraction of the detail I originally documented. The published stories I wrote may have included a picture or a quote here or there….but they did not really capture the essence….
Why did I not see the value these images would hold?
It’s so easy to move on to the next thing; the next story or project or adventure, and let the reflections get lost. Honestly, if the magazines or newspapers I was writing for didn’t want them, I just assumed no one else would be interested either, and moved on to the next focus.
Why wasn’t I more organised?
Because you’re NOT organised, my friends would probably laugh. It’s true, but normally, when I see the importance of something, I force myself to do it. It would have been so simple to label these pictures, write the memories while they were fresh and most powerful, and keep them all in one place. I should have immediately emailed those who had email addresses, and written snail mail addresses in an address book. But I didn’t.
So what am I going to do about it?
- First, I resolve to stop lamenting.
- Second, from this moment forward, I will prioritise captioning the images, writing down my impressions while they are fresh, and keeping them all organised in one place.
- Third, I am going through all my archives, including emails and now defunct blogs, journals and scraps of paper to see what I can find and add.
- Fourth, I'll be sharing them here, incomplete recollections and reflections included.
I hope you enjoy.:)
And if anyone has any suggestions for ways to make this easier, please feel free to share them here!
